Over the last three years, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and its subsidiary company, Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd have been pushing plans to build a 300MW coal-fired power plant on the west coast of Sabah, North Borneo in spite of major protests.
Kg Sinakut, the proposed site of SESB's coal plant is extremely valuable, world-renowned, diverse ecoregion surrounding delicate, endangered and protected flora and fauna species on land and sea. The coal plant, which is to have a mortality of 25 years requires the import of coal from Kalimantan, Indonesia, and will pass through precious coral reefs every day, putting this globally significant ecoheritage in great danger.
Concerned citizens from across Sabah, Malaysia and the globe have expressed their disapproval since the beginning of this plan but to little avail. Because of TNB's influence, most our political leaders and government run industries including have not openly and persistently fought this one project that would tarnish Sabah's image as a 'green state' whilst damaging several other billion ringgit industries and smaller sustainable industries.
We want to expose TNB-SESB's complete lack of regard for human interest and absence of ecological responsibility in pushing this coal plant project onto Sabahans. Sabah does not want coal! We want energy but not bad enough to kill everything that we stand for! We want the Malaysian government to use Sabah as a platform for the nation's green technology innovations! As a major contributor to the Malaysian economy, we feel that we at least deserve that much.

@starranise considering the coal plant will compromise the environment, perhaps the project will have to be relocated to somewhere else, to protect our precious natural heritage. Solving the energy issues is a must for all mankind, thus building new power plants are necessary. In my opinion, we should look into Nuclear energy to replace the coal and diesel power plant. Many may say it is lagi stupid and dangerous, but if you really know about nuclear energy, you will know its benefits!

@johnkenny888 that would be hypocritical. It's not "out of sight, out of mind." We can't just sweep this under the rug. It's not just about Sabah, the whole world is jeopardised by coal plants contributing to global warming.
In my opinion, if we cannot harness energy that is already there, why mine for coal or opt for nuclear, when TNB and the government are not showing concern over the public's wellbeing or the environment? Besides, studies say that nuclear's more expensive than solar. So how?

@johnkenny888 I am not as critical of nuclear energy as I am having it supplied by people who would lie, use short cuts and would not consider the health and safety of its consumers and the environment.
Yes, we want power but not if it means a slow and painful suicide.

@starranise It is very ignorant to comment nuclear technology is bad for mankind and environment. We always link it to nuclear bomb and radiation disaster. Have you done any background checks on the benefits of nuclear technology on mankind? Agriculture, Energy, Medicine, Imaging benefits from nuclear technology knowledge. Many European country that concerns of the environment opted nuclear for power for decades. Reason = Clean, Efficient and definitely environmental friendly.

@johnkenny888 Dood, I'm not knocking nuclear energy. I'm saying that nuclear energy in the wrong hands is dangerous. Sabah's electrical facilities are working at a 60% capacity. Lahad Datu Energy insists that coal plant refuse helps fish and prawns to breed better. Najib tells the UN he wants to reduce carbon emissions then come back and tell us to build a coal plant. Go on TNB's website and check their CSR. It's pathetic. I don't trust irresponsible people to build a nuclear plant.
