12/17 of the premiere of the Kirov/Mariinsky Ballet's reconstruction of Marius Petipa's final revival of "La Bayadère" as staged in 1900. March 31, 2002, Mariinsky Theatre, St. Petersburg. The audience is comprised of the most important people of the ballet world, particularly in Russia.

See 1/17 for extensive notes on the production.

Unfortunately the quality of my film does not allow one to see the restored décor. There is a youtube clip where it can be seen perfectly. See the clip titled "Vishneva & Sarafonov - La Bayadere".

**Cast for this clip -

--3 Shades soloists - Irina Golub, Irina Zhelonkina & Nadezhda Gonchar

**Résumé of dances & scenes for this clip -

Grand scène du rêve (The Kingdom of the Shades)
1. Sortie des bayadères
2. Valse lento

**Notes -

When Petipa first staged "La Bayadère" in 1877, the scene "The Kingdom of the Shades" actually took place in an illuminated palace in the sky on a fully lighted stage. When he mounted his final revival in 1900 (which is shown here), Petipa chose to have the scene take place in a dark, rocky landscape in the Himalayan mountains. The décor for this scene was restored using a model of the original set that is still preserved in the archives of the St. Petersburg State Museum of Theatre.

In spite of whatever revisions have taken place to the full-length ballet over the years, the choreography for the scene "The Kingdom of the Shades" has been remarkably well preserved.

  • 2 bad it's impossible 2 see the sets....if i remember correctly it's a rocky landscape......

it would b nice to see a company reconstructing the version withe a palace of heavenly light apearing

  • that would be grand!! That is how Petipa originally staged it in 1877, but he changed it in 1900 to the rocky landscape. To see the set, watch this clip - "Vishneva & Sarafonov - La Bayadere".
