some man in UK got out of court because his barrister said that the police in their reports had called it an RTA which implies that it was an accident and that no-one was to blame so they couldn't procesecute him for it as not his fault...even though it was!

No difference. RTA is road traffic accident and RTC is road traffic collision. if you have ever seen the film "Hot Fuzz" its explained pretty well in that!
