It is hard to determine how far out a turkey is from you. To help with this problem, Winchester Ammunition came out with a load called the high density extended range. You can buy them in 12 and 20 gauges.

  • steel shot is the way to go IF and ONLY IF you have a gun/barrel capable of shooting it. lead shot gives me the creeps when i shoot anything with it and plan to eat it. with steel shot it's as easy as waving a metal detector over the meat to remove 100% of the shot and fragments.

  • If you plan on eating the turkey, might want to use typical pellets (shot) ammunition. Its illegal to use slugs anyway in most places.

  • Is it better to use shell or slug for turkeys
