I'm not too well up on Mayan mythology and that, but I think their calendar stops there because they didn't really see the need to go much further. The earthquake prediction was made subsequently to add a bit of drama to the the sudden ending of the calendar. Probably by Hollywood, etc...
Solstices are generally recorded as it's a point when everyone can recognise that time's big cycle is entering another phase.

There is a cycle called the great return, and we are in the 5th kingdom of mankind. According to the mayans it ends in dec 21st 2012 by earthquake on the winter solstic :) (this is also why stone henge marks the solstice and other monuments.)

@ManilaSyndicate this is not popular music, this is art at high level man!, but yes, syd was one of the geniuses of rock music, one of the best british composers (very far from the british composers of that time) of all times.
