Following the trackbed of the Mayfield to Heathfield section of the Cuckoo Line,44 years after it was closed to passengers.Opened by the London,Brighton & South Coast Railway in 1880 the line north of Hailsham closed to passengers on 14th June 1965.The Hailsham to Polegate section of the line closed in September 1968.From Polegate to Heathfield the old line is now the "Cuckoo Trail" with access for walkers and cyclists.Heathfield Tunnel is open during the summer months and a section of the line to the north of the tunnel can be walked for about a mile.

  • I walked and videoed this in the 1980s... even was given a rare glimpse inside Mayfield station booking hall as they had builders in doing some work ( because the station is a private house now) - so just happened to be there at the right time...
