CHRISTOPH WILLIBALD RITTER VON GLUCK (1714 - 1787)

Trio sonata for two violins and basso continuo in C major

1. Largo

2. Presto

3. Poco Allegro

Performed by Musica Antiqua Koln
Directed by Reinhard Goebel

*If you decide to purchase the album this piece comes from, be sure to read the program notes! Reinhard basically slams these pieces calling them "instrumental sins of [Gluck's] youth". It leads to a question not answered by the notes: why the hell did Reinhard bother to record these then if he obviously thought they were garbage? :)

Anyhow, I think they are a nice listen even though they aren't anything particularily deep. Hope you enjoy them as well.

**TRIVIA!: Did you know that Handel said that Gluck "knows no more of counterpoint than my cook"? Seems that Gluck doesn't have too many fans. :(

  • I think this is very orignal; by the way, i'm one of those fans. You should hear his ballet music. It's charming! I've also read about that comment Handel made about musical skills of Gluck, however counterpoint was already starting to die by that time, so it really doesn't mind. Although is too ironical, because Händel were a strong influence in Gluck's music.
