In January 2012, the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) awarded the Multimodal Transportation and Infrastructure Consortium (MTIC) Tier I University Transportation Center status. One of ten such institutions, MTIC received funding through a competitive grant solicitation to help solve existing transportation challenges and to further develop the capacity to address future needs through applied intermodal research and advanced technology. Specifically, MTIC's research pro-gram includes projects related to intermodal and multimodal transportation that enhance economic competitiveness in six primary research areas:
• Highway Infrastructure, Operations and Security
• Geospatial Systems
• Maritime Operations and Analysis
• Multimodal Systems Operations and Analysis
• Recreation and Alternative Transportation
• Transportation Finance and Economics
