Regarding price, I saw this for 284.99 at the first place I looked. I think that is not bad if you intend to make lots of bowls.
You would have to be a good metalworker/machinist to make this device.

Nice tool but it should be prohibited to cut down trees of that age. They should be considered as monuments.
