  • @BeanMeister22 for your info the Trimet MAX is voted as America's top tier transit system. For some reason people like it. In the long run, buses add more congestion than any type of rail and are not neccessarily cheaper for taxpayers if only by a small margin than their benefits. Busses are UNAPPEALING to the general public and spurr little to NO ECONOMIC GROWTH. Promote something unique like BRT's, but with trolleybuses to add appeal like Boston or San Fran. Cheap, Eco-friendly, & Efficient.

  • MAX adds to traffic because MAX lines are on the roadways; Interstate Ave lost half its traffic lanes when MAX went in. I grew up there and have family who works for TriMet and MAX. Studies have shown that the MAX riders used to ride the bus, so MAX has not increased TriMet's ridership. Most MAX riders drive their car to a MAX station, or take a bus, which shows that MAX is inefficient and can never replace a bus. Max has trouble in very cold, and very hot weather; buses do not.

  • We got rid of street-running streetcars here in Boston years back. Too many accidents and traffic jams.

  • does the red line go to the lloyd center by chance ?????

  • @jemdude22 MAX has increased congestion on the streets where the lanes were removed. I have never ridden MAX, because it does not go where I need to go, but neither did the bus. I have family who work for the system, so I don't dislike it, but it's way over priced, for the little, if any, benefits it offers. Recently they built the first heavy rail commuter train; it is also a big money loser.

  • @jemdude22 As buses were eliminated people went back into their cars because MAX didn't go where they need to go. Govt. has been forcing light rail on us, even though it gets voted down (they backdoor it with land swaps).

  • @jemdude22 I also wish that light rail was more popular here. Essentially, the MAX system lured people from the bus system, but it did nothing to increase the overall public transportation numbers. Many of the buses run on clean LPG, whereas much of our electricity comes from coal plants (even with all our hydropower). There has not been any measurable difference in the amount of pollution created.

  • @BeanMeister22 @BeanMeister22 Personally i feel that light rail transit or streetcar/trams are a much more attractive mode of public transport to the transit users as compared to conventional diesel buses. Light rail or modern streetcars which are cheaper to build are employed to brigde the gap between heavy rail trains and traditional streetcars. Personally, I would like to see them running in my city.

  • @BeanMeister22 Thanks for sharing the more insightful information about MAX. It is disheartening to learn that the ridership is low and the system currently operates deeply in red! Maybe one could take comfort by the fact that the city authorities have a lot of foresight for the future development of the city by chosing light rail. They are doing their best to encourage the use of public transport by making it more attractive and entitling it with more priorities.
