January 20th, 2011 was a fun day for yours truly- a chase of the New York Susquehanna & Western Binghamton-Syracuse road job! The video kicks off with a shot of Canadian Pacific train 931 (NS train 31T) in Port Dickinson, NY (just north of Bingo) with NS Dash-9s on its run from Enola to Montreal. We then catch up with NYSW train BH-1 in Binghamton, with NYSW SD40-2 3018, NYSW SD70M 4052, and NYSW SD40T-2 3016 for power. The middle unit is an especially nice catch, since the NYSW SD70Ms have only been on NYSW rails for about a month, after their lease to RailAmerica was up. We give chase in the traditional fashion, catching the train again at Chenango Bridge, Chenango Forks, Whitney Point, Killawog, and Marathon. Things get intense north of Marathon on West River Road, a tiny two-lane road that VERY closely parallels the Susie-Q line for some distance. After we leave West River Road, we catch the train again at Blodgett Mills and just south of Cortland, before the train stops to work some of the industries in the city of Cortland itself. After shooting several shots of the power in Cortland, we shoot the train again at Homer, Tully, and Jamesville. We then finish up at CP-293 in Solvay (west of Syracuse), where the NYSW line ties into the CSX Chicago Line, but the train did not get there until after dark. CSX, however, kindly sent a couple trains past while we were there. Getting this footage was an amazing thrill, and I'd love to return to the Susie-Q to do it all again someday. In the meantime, I'm hoping you'll enjoy this footage!

  • @89jbj Indeed it was Thursday, January 20th... Thanks very much for the comment!

  • Nice video Matt. Too bad for the K5LAR24! Bargh! I hear enough of them! Lol.

  • @NS9710 Better that than the 4052's horn- a horribly sick RS5T that doesn't really sound like an RS5T anymore... Look for other videos of it on Youtube and you'll see (or rather, hear) what I mean...

  • Excellent video!

  • This is a great video, there are some key locations north of Tully along the Apulia rd. you may want to check out in the future. One is the crossing on Apulia rd. just south of Rt. 20,the Dodge rd. overpass,Eager rd. overpass, and the Jamesville beach crossing. You may already know these spots but I try to catch the ''Yellow Jackets'' at these locations when I can.I have never posted anything as good as your video but I should definitly spend a day chasing the NYS&W. Nice work!!!

  • Many, many years ago the NYS&W Society was on a rail fan trip and we stopped at the Whitney Point, NY spot for some photo run bys.

  • Epic video, Matt! I really enjoyed it.

  • @MC6853 I see what you mean, they use to have CSXT SD70MAC K5LAR24 style but meh, that was horrid! (the S5)
