( http://heritage-key.com/blogs/ann/treasures-hidden-cairo-museums-basement ) Dr Zahi Hawass takes us down into the basement of the Egyptian Museum, Cairo. He explains that when he was younger, he was part of a team which made a discovery in Kom Abu Bellou, and it was upon finding a statue of Aphrodite where Dr Hawass realised his love for Archaeology.

But on returning the artefacts to the Cairo Museum, they were simply stored in the basement and forgotten by previous directors. Dr Hawass explains that this is why he is working to open up the basement of Cairo Museum and share its treasures that have been stored away for a long time.

  • I would love to tour the basements of the world's museums- I'm sure there are hundreds of thousands of treasures and artworks that no one but curators ever lay eyes on...

  • Incredible that the Egyptians have so many artefacts they don't even know what to do with them all!

  • @Z1BABOUINOS no this is our Arabic numerals system. The number 24 is ۲٤ in Arabic. Try to Google "eastern Arabic numerals" for more information

  • I would feel the same way as he did uncovering a precious treasure from long ago.

  • the way we have museums today do you think that ancient eygpt had places like this aswel.

  • I really hope you have undestructable windows, bars and hardened Seel doors everywhere on that Museum. Making it impossible to get in without keys.

At Civil Unrest the Museums usually gets robbed.

Just look at Irak, the Baghdad Museum was completley emptied by the locals when the Americans came, and extremley old and valuabe treasures of humaitys history went forever lost to a crazy mob grabbing what they could... i lack of words of how extremley sad this is.

  • What a fascinating man. I never get tired of his stories.

  • The basement is marked with Greek letters?
