I got both my birds as rehomes when they were already grown, so I never had that chance (but I'd be scared to, anyway, so that's just as well). Enjoy your new Pionus baby. Pis are wonderful birds.

I've hand fed lovebirds and GC Conures and loved the bonding process that comes with handfeeding. It's something that I like to do because I feel that the bird and I get to know eachother a whole lot better. I know birds don't always bond with whoever hand feeds them, they bond to who spends the most time with them as well. By handfeeding and being the owner at the same time, it makes the relationship that much better :)

You shouldn't start clicker training until after it's fully weaned, but once the baby is eating entirely on its own (for at least a couple of weeks), you can get started and then the sky's the limit! :)
Just curious, do you have experience hand-feeding birds? Why not let the bird finish weaning with the breeder?

When is a good age to start clicker training in a pionus? I'm about to buy a baby from a breeder to start hand-feeding myself.

What snacks are you feeding your bird? Mine only likes peanuts and almonds BUT I was told not to use those b/c they are fatty for them??

@erika925925 We use safflower seeds for training. Depending on the size of your bird, you can also use pieces of sunflower seeds (or if your bird is very big, a whole shelled sunflower seed). If you're only feeding them for training rewards, those won't be too unhealthy. But the treats you give should be small enough that the bird eats them in one bite. And only feed those during training.

Just curious, did you handfeed your Pionus, or did the breeder?
