Oh, and just for clarity, the "presemispin" bowlers threw what was called a "full roller" back then. In fact, during the tournament, one of the bowlers (I think it was Tommy something or other) had just switched to a semi-spin. Also, it's interesting to see that some pros still used semi-fingertip balls.
Back around 1977 ABC played the entire 1966 tournament on TV. I think it was one of the most historical tournaments ever because at the same time you had the pre-semi spin guys (Ed Lubanski who at that time was still only using thumb and middle finger) the semi-spin guys (Dick Weber, Don Carter and others) and the early crankers (Carmen Salvino and to a lesser extent Dave Davis). You can see why Salvino had such longevity into the modern era: he threw a tank. Thanks for the post!!!!!!!!!
Thompson is indeed one and the same. He used to be the director of the PBA's (then) Headquarters Region. Most of the guys today don't know that he was a great player. He bowled one year for the great Stroh's Beer team from Detroit. Incidently, Strampe bowled for Stroh's, too - but several years before.
This is the same Al Thompson who was the director of the (then)Headquarters Region of the PBA. I believe he bowled one year for the great Stroh's Beer team from Detroit - and Strampe bowled for Stroh's before that.
Wow! This was one of Bob's finest bowling moments. I wonder if his opponent Al Thompson is the same Al Thompson that used to work as a regional director for the PBA several years ago?

I have all my equipment drilled at Strampe's Pro Shop at 14 and Garfield just north of Detroit. Good to see some good footage of him.
