Stray Thoughts ~ Tom Turner
Written 1891-1894
Have you ever thought (orconsidered) how difficult it is for a man to be fair, or just, in his opinion of things? How selfish we are in our opinions! - we judge, by the manner a thing suits OUR taste, or affects OUR likes or dislikes - rarely (if ever) taking the trouble to thoroughly weigh the merits of the thing (or subject) and give it a truly unbiased judgement. To epitomise - All our opinions are governed by self.
We get all settled down into our groove, which we seldom leave...we get so used to this general routine, that we become almost like automatons. And never think of anything outside our groove.
Everyone must know that our images are faulty - no one should expect a perfect image from a faulty mirror - yet, in some way, they do - whoever thinks of making allowances for these many distorting traits of ours? When you come to think of it - it seems almost impossible for anyone to reach such a state as to reflect an absolutely true image. Idle speculation most would say, why bother yourself like this, take life easy, you don't make the path any easier to travel, even if you do try to see a little ahead - well, perhaps such might be right, who can tell? We all think WE are right and know best. That very fact shows we must all be wrong - if not we would all agree.
The world does strange unaccountable things. We are ruled by customs - the slave of fashion. We even dress our minds in the prevailing fashion - and suffer death by conforming to its laws.
Again you make me think :)
