Winner of the 1961 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, "The Virgin Spring" - based on the 13th century Swedish ballad called "Töres dotter i Wänge" - is the first film from Ingmar Bergman's very critically successful output from the 1960's.

In this scene the girls - Karin (played by Birgitta Pettersson) and Ingeri (played by Gunnel Lindblom) - are on there journey to bring candles to the church. Karin beautifully sings a very lovely melody.

  • It is an ancient folk song of Sweden. There are variations of the song. It is sung in swedish, as the movie is in swedish too. The song can be found online in both swedish and english with a little research, and it is included on many swedish folk music cd's.

  • @bigdaddy13213 Hey thanks for the info.

  • Does anybody knows what song is Karin singing here?

The script for the movie itself was based on a medieval ballad (Töres dotter i Vänge), so it may interesting to know about this one.

  • I've been trying to figure this out too.

  • u made a mistake on the description this isnt his first film his first is crisis

  • It is Swedish mate.

  • It's in Swedish but it will have English, Spanish and French subtitles when you get it, rented or bought. It's an amazing film. Then again everything by Bergman is.

  • What language is this movie in? I'm trying to find the answer to that question, but it's proving to be difficult. Is it in Swedish, or English...? It's an interesting movie that I would like to see one day, but I also want to understand it, ya know?

  • I can't be sure, but I think the melody is from a song called "I himmelen (In heaven above)" but then Ingmar Bergman wrote new lyrics to it.
