Bored at the office, decided to play with some of the ancient sun hardware we had sitting around.

Right now, the machine has 4x400mhz ultrasparc IIe's with 4GB of ram. It's pretty nicely spec'd, computationally speaking. I'm looking for some cheap u320 drives I can throw in there.. will make a nice beginner linux shell machine for my local LUG members.

  • That is a painfully old slow machine which will suck large amounts of power and give you very little in return for all its size and weight. I agree that it was a very nice machine in 1998 but really, just get a Sun Blade 2500 with dual UltraSparc IIIi procs and 4G of memory. It will be far cheaper in the long run. Regardless, I still have a SparcStaion 20 kicking about so I am just as bad .. maybe. That E450 should be running Solaris 8 my friend. Maybe Solaris 9 at most.

  • @lastmiles the e450 was given to me for free. Since our datacenter has no shortage of storage space, and our power bill is a static rate included in our rent, there really are no cons to keeping this thing around ;)

Also, the only thing that makes solaris worth using is ZFS (namely RAID-Z3), since I have no intention of using this e450 as a fileserver.. I really have no good reason to run solaris.

(especially since the purpose of this box is for hosting shells for a *Linux* user group)

  • Love it hope its still alive and kicking, good save!

  • @lastmiles it would run more harddrives then my server i got today. So for me it would be upgradeing also it has 4gb ram. So i wouldnt call it an bucket of crap.

  • @37474748 That old E450 is a bucket of scrap. People throw them away every day. However, a Sun Niagara T2 unit like a T5200 series would be very cool. Regardless, any AMD Opteron machine will run circles around them in terms of cost, speed, power usage and maybe cooling.

  • Thumbs up for anything that can run Debian.

  • no arch this time? :)) of course not, afaik arch has no sparc port. anyway, i'd rather install (open)solaris on that beast. just for fun.

  • i would like to get hold of that machine :D i would love haveing that next to my dell server :)
