This very disturbed pygmy killer whale had beached itself earlier a few hundred feet down the coast. Beach walkers had "helped" the whale back into the surf not understanding the whale was intentional in its efforts, perhaps to rest or possibly preparing to die. Back in the water it swam down the coast and tried to beach on the rocks. Fortunately NOAA personnel familiar with the dynamics of whale strandings were in the area. They had been watching the small pod of whales since early May. They were able to capture the whale and comfort it. The pygmy killer whale was found to have only one functioning lung and other problems.
People not familiar with the subtleties of stranding whales are encourage to contact authorities who can determine what is going on and make informed decisions on what can be done for the betterment of the animal. Pushing the creature back into the ocean may seem like the thing to do but often that is not the case.
My personal thanks to all the government workers and the private citizens who worked so hard for this beautiful animal. Aloha Dr. Leisure
