A symposium about the identity of SW Erdenase and The mystery surrounding "The Expert at the Card Table" was held in Helena Mt August 26th and 27th ..
.
About 14 participants, Marty Demerest only wanted to get together with Richard Hatch and Kalush for his research and was surprised it had gotten out of hand in his opinion. No consensus was reached... there are still about 14 possibles,
Most of the discussions were dry, expanding on Jason Alexander's theory about WE Sanders being Erdnase, Richard Hatch being the Skeptic defending SA Andrews as most likely. Marty Demerest saying there is too much circumstantial evidence supporting Sanders as the candidate. Lots of unscholarly discussions about Victorian Culture, tainted by movie conceptual images, and side conversations.
A very nice gift bag was given to the participants. The bag had playing cards, a pocket edition of Erdnase, and a personal diary.
Nobody wanted to drink, until the Montanans tapped the keg... Then Steinmeyer tapped his bottle and everyone loosened up somewhat. Sat Night definitely had more interesting social conversation with magic techniques and networking ideas.
Apparently Demerest is purely a writer, not a magician, and is pursuing a Sanders Book for Alexander, which is the purpose of the meeting. It was in Helena as this was Sander's house. Demerest apparently bought a 140,000 acre wheat and cattle ranch above Shelby where he writes.
He was presenting his take on Alexander's theory to see if any interest would be generated before he wrote the novel.. the guys there were mostly publishers in magic.

thanks to Robert Clarkson for his input on this report..
For the Record it was Marty Demarest presenting David Alexander's theory first proposed in Genii that S E Sanders was Erdnase. The evidence was circumstantial, not totally conclusive but still plausible. We have no clue who Demarest is writing for, other than himself, but he is definitely researching for a future novel. One problem that presented itself is the tendency modern people have to not think outside their own education and experiences and romanticize historical events out of context.
