According to local mainstream report, Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen was quoted as saying Penang is lagging behind Malacca in terms of tourist arrivals. She said, Malacca recorded 8.9 million tourist arrivals last year compared to Penang's 5.96 million.

However, this number is refuted by Penang Exco for Tourism, Danny Law Heng Kiang. He provided numbers and stats from Ministry of Tourism which showed that Melaka remained on the sixth spot while Penang remains on the third spot after Kuala Lumpur and Pahang.

Meanwhile, CM Lim said Penang doesn't wish to be the jaguh kampung by comparing with Melaka. Instead, Penang aims to be on par with other neighbouring countries and said Penang prefers to compete with destinations like Phuket and Bali instead.
