A video by Nothingman. Very few people have been able change a sport in the way Richard Petty changed Nascar. Prior to Petty, Nascar was a just another racing touring series really looking for an identity. That identity was discovered when Richard Petty hit the racing scene. Petty was considered to be "the common man" and people during the 60's and 70's were able to identify with him. Richard was able to score 200 cup wins in a career that spanned four decades, a record that may never be broken, along with 7 series titles, a mark only reached by one other driver. This is a tribute to the King.

  • I think under the old system, Johnson would have only won 2 championships, Stewart, Gordon, and Harvick all would have won a/another championship. Tony Stewart was asked about this last season when he lost the point lead to Johnson and said in the chase that it is silly to bring up the old system since they had not used it in many years. The history books are going to show Jimmie as the third most successful champion, maybe number one. Its a shame, but it is what it is

  • How can anyone even compare the class of Richard Petty to someone like Earnhardt, If he couldn't pass you He'd crash you not much talent in that

  • long live the king of nascar, richard petty.

  • @AJFay77 Unfortunately it is what it is. And I overheard one of my friend's yesterday ask, "Yes ,Jimmie has won the Chase 5 times in a row, but who really won those championships?"

Now, in my opinion, from a driver's perspective, when Nascar made the Chase, was it a good idea? It's tough to say, and it depends on how you look at it. Now should Nascar add more drivers to the Chase? No. Should Nascar make an elimination system? No. Should Nascar shorten the length of certain races? Yes.

  • @MotorsportRevolution Johnson would have 2, Stewart would have 1, Gordon would have 2 more, Edwards 1, Harvick 1.

It's stupid considering the point of the system is to have a close points battle, when JJ's "first" would've been by only 4 points with the old system over Kenseth.

  • Anyway, getting away from all of the IFs and BUTs, Richard holds numerous records for wins, poles, starts, number of manufacturers driven, championships, # of wins at specific racetracks. Many of these will never be broken in a specific series. I honestly am not a Kyle Busch fan, but he said his goal was to win 200 NASCAR races, and after last season, I would not be surprised if he reaches that mark. But I highly doubt it will ever be match in the Cup series.

  • @NASCAR48Fan1 And you can't compare winning a championship in the Chase and winning a championship in the pre-Chase years. Jimmie wouldn't have 5 straight championship without a Chase, and with a Chase, Dale Earnhardt wouldn't have won 7 championships, but both of those conclusions are IFs.

  • @combatking20 I am a JJ fan, and I personally don't think he will ever be at the level of The King or Dale. He is a very talented driver, but no one will get to 200 wins, and IF he does get 6 or 7 championships, I don't think they will be in a row with all the competition rising closer to his level. I will never say that JJ is better than those 2 legends of the sport....

  • Dale Sr. ans Richard Petty will always be the best drivers in NASCAR history. Enough said.
