Cyril Scott (1879-1970) is best known today for his piano piece 'Lotus Land', but is other works (harmonically advanced for their day) are beginning to be recorded and performed more widely than for many years. This piece is Scott's 1915 piano transcription of the well-known Herrick setting by Charles Edward Horn (1786-1849). Scott dedicated the piece (which also exists in a version for violin and piano) to Percy Grainger. For more information on Scott's life and music, have a look at the site set up by his granddaughter Amanta (herself a musician): http://www.cyrilscott.net

  • This brings back such great memories for me- I used to sing this song many years ago when i was a young boy soprano... Thanks for Sharing Philip!

  • @Cedricfollyman Thank you very much for watching - I'm glad it brought back memories for you!

  • i was looking for a soprano type cherry ripe vocal, But, this is really quite soothingly airy light and wonderful.

    well done its very fine.

    thank you

  • Thank you. This is quite an 'arty' version and would not be a lot of help for anyone trying to learn to sing the original Horn song - but it might help give a few interpretative ideas.

  • Fascinating, and remarkably pleasant. Bach dabbled in this sort of harmonization (some of the recitatives in the cantatas, notably), so as a confirmed Baroque addict I find this not at all strange, despite my ignorance of relatively recent music.

  • Thank you for your most interesting comment. Sorry I have put so little Baroque music on this channel!

  • wonderful...truly wonderful

  • Thank you - I've never accompanied the violin version, but hope to do so some day!

  • Well done. I've played the violin version many times. Tallahassee Suite too. Excellent music.
