these are the engines that ended the (stock block) Hemi chrysler reign in drag racing. Pete Robinson, Don Prudhomme,(Top fuel) Mickey Thompson (Funny Car), George Montgomery AA/GS....

The Hemi racers then had to develop high-deck aftermarket blocks and billet heads to get back on top. Most people think the Hemi was always the fuel champ. They had it, and they lost it. The current fuelers contain NO Chrysler parts. Hemis are great, but they couldn't beat these motors in modified stock form.

Robinson would come to the line, jack up the back of the car, speed up the slicks and then drop the jacks (controlled from the driver's compartment) at the green light! I saw Pete with this car, at Lions, in the summer of 1963 ~ my first year attending drag races at drag strips in Southern California ~ where I grew up; Lions, Irwindale, OCIR, Fontana, Pomona (for the Big Go West in February) and Famosa (Bakersfield) for the '65 & '67 Smokers' Meet. The NHRA eventually banned Pete's design.
