United States Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC) is a component command of the U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) that comprises the Marine Corps' contribution to SOCOM. Its core capabilities are direct action, special reconnaissance, foreign internal defense, counterterrorism, information operations, and unconventional warfare.[1] Its creation was announced on 1 November 2005 by US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, following a meeting between him, the USSOCOM commander General Bryan D. Brown, and the Marine Corps Commandant General Michael Hagee on 28 October 2005. MARSOC was officially activated on February 24, 2006 with ceremonies at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

MARSOC comprises roughly 2,500 Marines and supporting sailors (navy hospital corpsman), and is currently commanded by Major General Dennis Hejlik, formerly the deputy commander of I Marine Expeditionary Force. It is based at Camp Lejeune and will be split into five subordinate commands.

The potential participation of the Marine Corps in SOCOM has been controversial since SOCOM was first formed in 1986. At the time, Marine Corps leaders felt that their Force Reconnaissance units were best kept in the Marine Corps' MAGTF command structure, and that the detachment of an "elite" Marine Special Operations unit from the Marine Corps would be to the detriment of the Marine Corps as a whole. A re-evaluation following the September 11th attacks and the global war on terror, along with new policy established by Secretary Rumsfeld and then Commandant Gen. James Jones at The Pentagon, caused the Marine Corps to work towards integration with SOCOM. The establishment of MARSOC represents the most significant step towards this goal, and follows the establishment of MCSOCOM Detachment One (DET1), a small Marine Corps detachment formed as a pilot program to test Marine Corps integration into SOCOM and that served under Naval Special Warfare Squadron One. Detachment 1 was made up mostly by Force Recon Marines from 1st and 2nd Force Reconnaissance Companies along with other hand picked support men. Detachment 1 conducted a multitude of special operations in Iraq alongside their Special Operations brothers of the sister services. A SOCOM survey/study of the unit's deploment clearly showed the success and performance of Det 1 and how well they conducted themselves. Detachment 1 was disbanded in 2006 soon after the creation of MARSOC.

  • @mikey0rox Marsoc is kinda young. So stories but not many

  • Thats the life. No rank, no patches, and no names.

  • @bburns112 Thanks, I'll do some research on what you said, I wasn't aware that MARSOC is asked to make a Teir 1 Unit, if this is true I would love to serve under it, Marines all the way! Thanks Again

  • @SaiVihtooMyint MARSOC mostly conducts Direct Action. However lately they have been doing lots of Reconnaissance missions and conducting operations with the ANA to train them. MARSOC came from USMC Recon, which was mostly Reconnaissance and Scout/Sniper oriented guys. Apparently JSOC has requested MARSOC create a Tier 1 unit on par with CAG/DEVGRU as well, so they will do a lot of High Value Target missions and such.

  • I don't understand the difference between Green Berets and MARSOC, are they the same but just different branches? What would be the "job" of MARSOC units? I have a general idea of Special Forces but not much for these guys. Never less I have respect for US Forces. I remember my dad who was in the Marines said that Army has all the gear but Marines have all the training lol.

  • Are all US Marines queer nowadays - seems you have to be able to do 'golden showers' on corpses to get in -?

  • going to bootcamp in 3 weeks im fuckin stoked! then recon indoc after mct... hopefully hah

  • MARSOC is fucking scary. This is the most elite force on the planet.

The stories I've heard about these guys are insane.
