I read on thumpertalk about this crazy method of cleaning a chain - you remove it from your bike and attach it to a drill and let it run through some kerosene for 30 mins. Thought I would finally give it a try, to see if it truly was the "best" way to clean a chain...

Here is the original post I read 2 years ago that inspired me to attempt this method of cleaning:

  • Where did you buy kerosene?? Pls answer

  • @TheBicycleGeek any hardware store should have it. Canadian Tire for me, but Home Depot or the like should also have it.

  • One way this would probably work better is if you used a deeper container and held a wire brush at the top of the sprocket.

  • @ACountryBoy4X4 that's a good idea...

  • can i use oil out of my dirt bike bike that is used to clean my chain?

  • @themadbuzzer that won't CLEAN it, but I know guys that lube their chain with recycled oil. Clean it with a stiff brush (toothbrush works great) and kerosene, then lube it with your old dirt bike oil.

  • @x2b0y I hadn't thought of that but it looks like you and the dog did. Actually the biggest spark danger would be from the drill. Ever used a cordless drill in the dark? It's like a mini fireworks show. It's the vapours not the liquid that would be the danger from the Kerosene.

  • the dog stole the show

  • you really think its going to work with tha much kerosene point less tacking it off the bike

  • With kerosene being a fuel source and there being various metal on metal contact and therefor the chance of a spark isn't this dangerous?

  • @artsdomain The dog knew best..

  • @TheBicycleGeek its just home heating oil man im form ireland

  • $50-$75 bucks get u a new chain.. GODDAMN. that is BINDED the fuck up

  • LOL THE DOG

  • @heavydiesel Ok, Thanks a lot man!
