On Jaunary 23, there will be a naton wide rally to protest against the suspension of our Parliament. Prime Minister Stepehen Harper has shut down our House of Common until March for the second time in a little over one year , which means that many of the bills will no longer have the chance to become law and canadians will not have a representative to represent their interest in this constitutional democracy.

True, governemnts have suspended parliament before, but not in a minortiy government situation when Canadians demanded , through an election, for the partiesto work together in one of the most devastating depression when there are still so many bills and so many issues to work on, not when so many Canadians don``t have the same privilege to not work like our Prime Minister, let alone those who can`t even find a job. The Parliament is not a private doll house for the Conservative Party where they can shut it down when they are done playing, it belongs to all the parties and the people of Canada.

The suspension of Parliament also means that Parliamentary committee that were trying to lookinto the allegation of Canadian military knowningly sending Taliban insurgents to abuses or even torture at the hands of Afghan authorities will no longer be able to go to work.

Prime Minister Harper skipped questioning in the House on Richard Colvin`s allegation of torture in Novemeber. Now the Harper conservatives will not have to answer why they have decided to throw insults and destroy the credibility of the former second deiplomat in Afghanistian, Richard Colvin, whom testitfied in November that he has repeatedly warned the government of detainee abuses in 2006 and 2007 without response from the government.

The suspension of Parliament will also give Harper time in which to appoint new senators so they can hold a majority in the Senate and Senate committees. Right now the only thing that is stopping the Conservatives from putting people in jail for having 200 or less marijuana plants in their own home is the Liberal dominated Senate. After Harper`s vacation, it is likely that his wish to jail potheads will pass into law, Liberal Senator Larry Campbell suggests that up to 1000 more inmates could be added per year as a result.

The government has always said that they support the troops. On Dec 31, another r Canadian soldiers and a journalist was killed in Afghanistian. I wonder does Stephen Harper thinks that the shutting down of Parliament, and democracy an act of support for our troops in Afghanistian.

Maybe a sign that reads `Support the Troops, Make Parliament Work` would go well with the rally.

  • If the people really wanted harper out he would be out. People do want him out but most people don't or don't care. harper has to do what the majority of canadians want. if he really messes things up we could get him out canadians are not victims of idiot steven harper.

  • The facebook group suggests that alot of people do care about the health of our democracy in Canada, and hopefully most of us do or will care

  • Harpers the best party.

  • are you people kidding? before you grandstand about democracy why dont you educate yoursselfs and research why in 2003 Cretien prorouged parliment for 82 days...to avoid discussion about the damning report from the auditor general...

about the sponsorship scandal....and research the rae days...democracy means more than running off at the mouth about somthing you know shit about.!! grow up!

  • didnt even know any of this was going on , you must make a facebook app it helps

  • OMG...did you actually delete a comment I posted contrary to your opinion!...Censorship, way to go DSOTN...it adds to your propogandist agenda.

All I said was having people join a facebook group isn't really a good indication of true public support. My estimation is that few people will participate in this rally, illustrating that Canadians are quite satisfied with the status quo and a change of leadership is not something the people of this country want. I guess we'll see in a few days.

  • Good Points, and great video. Keep it up!

Here's hoping Harper will stop acting like a tin-pot dictator.

  • Right on, darksideofthenation. The Senate issue is also very concerning, especially since Harper - while in the Reform party - advocated a triple-E Senate ('Equal, Effective, Elected'). Now, he's simply stacking it with cronies. I could list a few thousand other instances of PMO/CPC hypocrisy on display, but I'm sure you're familiar with them already, & me preaching to the converted is a waste of time at the moment. The 23rd should be a very good day! All the best!

  • other items that have been dropped now that Parliament is locked out include: pensions, wages, work programs, the economy, more bailouts + 38 others.

Thanks for posting this video. Canadians can join the Facebook group Canadians Against Proroguing Parliament.
