I personally see a lot of appeal in short stories. I consider novels as very long, full course meals. You have to pace yourself in both the preparation and consumption, and you need to take time to let the plot sort of...marinate? But short stories are more like pieces of candy, because they're allowed to be just bursts of sweetness, like how short stories are allowed to be all action, like a Hershey's Kiss. But I digress, because food analogies make me hungry.

I enjoy reading short stories though I prefer novels but I've never been able to write short stories very well. With what you mentioned, I spend a lot of time describing and showing my reader things and then my short stories turn into novels. Only one time in my life I intended to write a short story and actually did it. When we had to turn in 2 short stories for my creative writing class, I handed in that one and my second one was actually a snippet from a novel I was writing.

Short stories are really good for me, as a writer. When I try to write novels I tend to lose sight of the plot, and sometimes I wind up with a mess of characters and scenes with no point. Writing a short story is good practice for getting a concise plot together.
