Dutch recumbent competition: Alkmaar 2010, hares race

My 1000 metre was just fast enough to qualify for the 50 minute hares criterium. That doesn't mean that I've suddenly become a fast hare. Three little hares had their own race whilst being lapped every 3 minutest by the leading group. I finished 12th overall with an average of 45.6km/h. The fastest hares did something around 49km/h.


My bike is a Nazca Fuego, camera is a Drift X170.

Thanks very much for uploading the video.

Its fascinating compared to any track racing I've experienced. I guess there isn't nearly as much slipstream effect as on an upright bike so people are getting lapped all over the place, which makes it fun.

If the UCI wants exciting bike races perhaps it needs to allow recumbents.

How do recumbents ride over cobbles ? Less vibration but harder to handle ?

iirc There is a Nazca rider living in New Zealand.

There's is left draft, but we also need less. We cetainly gain advantage by riding as a group.

The UCI also involves a lot of rules regarding design and organization. We don't like that at all ;-)

A lot of 'bents have suspension at the back. Handling can be very easy, but much depends on the geometry of the bike. Some 'bent builders haven't found out yet how to build a bike that handles proper.

I've been in 2 recumbent races in my city but it was nothing like this race and there wasn't much slipstreaming happening as I guess the difference between the speeds was too big.

What does Nazca stand for ?

The brand Nazca is named after the people in Peru who made gigantic signs. Google: nazca hummingbird. The founders of Nazca Ligfietsen (Nazca Recumbents) have travelled through South America.

If you want to go faster I suggest you have 40 minute races. Apparently 40 minutes is the maximum time you can maintain your maximal aerobic output.

My understanding of the Lydiard system is that if you are going to hard you do it for no more than 40 minutes and probably every second day. Other rides can longer and slower or involve hill work for strength.
