@stevel738 That's the version given in "Star Trek: The REAL Story," co-authored by Herb Solow and Bob Justman. While there's some truth in it (Roddenberry had to make money off Star Trek somehow), he also had strong feelings about the music and fancied himself a poet. As creator and producer of the series, he had every right to pen a lyric, and to receive royalties from it. If Alexander Courage (the theme's composer) had a bone to pick, he should have read his contract more carefully.

@tsntana Actually I think Roddenberry wrote lyrics so he could claim co-authorship and get paid half the royalties everytime the theme was played. Now I know the trekkers will vote down this comment to -100 because it blasphemes the Holy Name of Gene, Blessed Be He, but that's the version of the story I heard.
