I think some level of judgment is right. I've actually spent a pretty good amount of time around "Those People" (the kind you where dealing with at the mini mart). And got to know them and they really are "Those People" (your snap judgment is right). Not saying you should love/care/try to help them, just saying that some people really are of a different mind set and that's how you have to deal with them. And I don't think there is anything worng with seeing that.

Critical thinking skills and the ability to type - these are the best things I took away from higher education. It didn't completely eradicate my tendency to do that same thing in my head in response to all that as you described doing.
Beautiful way of tying your own stuff into current events. This WOULD make a beautiful sermon.
