The Randy Weston African Rhythms Quintet with Obo Addy and Kwaku Martin Obeng live at the Jazz Gallery in New York City during "Kofi Ghanaba: a Tribute to the Devine Drummer." Living Jazz legend Randy Weston, master drummer and Worldbeat founder Obo Addy and African percussionist Kwaku Martin Obeng were the featured artists in this tribute to the late great African Jazz musician Kofi Ghanaba, who passed away in December of 2008. The memorial was co-produced by the Jazz Gallery and Jazzmobile as part of the Make Music New York Festival on July 21st, 2009. The Randy Weston African Rhythms Quintet features Randy Weston on piano, Alex Blake on bass, T.K. Blue on sax, Benny Powell on trombone and Neil Clarke African percussion; with special guests Obo Addy on the talking drum and Kwaku Obeng African percussion. This recording unfortunately cuts off in the middle of a really beautiful trombone solo because my camera's memory card was full. I had to delete a few things to tape the end of this amazing performance.

so was it 6/21 or 7/21? seems like a simple thing to keep straight...obo is a longtime friend who's lived here in portland for 30 yrs., but he's so in-demand elsewhere that he seldom plays locally anymore. he has both a traditonal ghanaian ensemble, okropong, & a very contemporary band called kukrudu, which means "earthquake". he's a master among masters!
