*Please read! This rink closed in 1987. I'm a long time skater, so when the opportunity came up to see if the floor was skateable for a reunion at the old closed in 1987 Majestic Rink, I had to make this video for all you past and present skaters to see.
The Majestic was built in 1919, and catered to thousands of skaters over the years. Sadly, it closed for reasons that are clouded. With over 1300 names on a petition to keep it open, it still closed. The room is used today for meetings and other city functions, but the floor is the original. Skating is on the re-bound in this tough economy. It's good clean fun and exercise.
It would sure be great to have a rink like this again. But if we can't have the rink, maybe we could have an all day Skate in this Fall for all to come and see the rink again.

If any of the folks who used to skate there would like to come to a reunion to catch up with old friends, please email or call the Iowa Maritime Museum and put your name on a list. It seems doubtful that the managers would allow this, but we would do it all for charity, making it a non profit event that would help the Museum.

I am willing to put in my time as a promoter and organizer at no charge, to see this get together moving. You would have to bring your own skates, as there are none here.

So thanks for watching and keeping the skating interest alive. It is a shame that many young folks will never get the chance to experience a rink in their lives, and I for one want history not to be forgotten. If it is, we will repeat it, good or bad.

  • Awesome video! Back in my younger days, in my home state of Kentucky, we had two roller rinks in Cynthiana. "The Roller Rink" beside the road that curves down and away from the high school, and "Charlie's Roller Rink" off of 1842 (I think). Those were the glory days, for sure, nowadays folks wonder why kids seem so depressed living in front of their XBox's. :(

  • That is really neat. I bought all of the Rinx Records from them they are stamped with the Majestic Arnold's Park IA.Rinx records were organ records played by Fred Bergin, Lee White, and Jimmy Caro. I know that Fred is now deceased Jimmy is as well. Not really sure about Lee but I imagine she would be way up there if still alive.

  • is that chuck norris? lol

  • Awesome video! I haven't skated for years. this bring back memories of when I went roller skating when I was a kid.

  • Dave is truly sad they are close ours closed about 12 years ago and they wonder why the kids roam the streets I lived there 4 nights a week for 20 years now its an art gallery for the upper class. art in my house is walmart HaHa they take these places and close them and leave the kids no where else togo [SAD IN PA.]

  • @ivaneduardo747 I believe it's the catabria I don't think I spelt that correctly. Either way I could be wrong but both fly very well indoor
