Absolutely wicked live performance by the Juan MacLean back in 2005, when the band was in its first incarnation; a 3-man combo. Juan MacLean center stage, oddly enough, playing Korg's small, lightweight virtual analogue synth, the microKorg, and cowbells and drumstick in back pocket - ready for action. oh yeah, sporting a pair of sick aviators; Eric Broucek manning up on the legendary Roland SH-101 Keytar synthesizer and a MOOG Theramin (has since left DFA and the Juan MacLean, and started his own production company) also assisting with hand claps and vocals ; and the best drummer I've ever seen, the great and sadly late Jerry Fuchs (also drummer for Maserati, Turing Machine, LCD Soundsystem, and !!!) without question was the most highly sought-after drummer on the scene, seen in this video decimating his kit with Simmons drum brain and mesmerizing an unsuspecting Southern California crowd.
"...metallic clatter, moogy squeals and coke-nosed loops, it fuses disco decadence and record-collector erudition without taking sides: raw rhythms garlanded with machine noise."
Day 2 of Arthurfest, Sept. 5, 2005, Lawn Stage at dusk, it took the angry, loud machines of The Juan MacLean to surpass Ben Chasney's other supernaut of a band. Juan accompanied by the great, 1/2 beast - 1/2 man drummer Jerry Fuchs and Eric Broucek well-armed with analog synths , met the L.A. sun as it melted into the Pacific and a diminishing crowd with fierce beats and prickly frequencies. The last thing anyone expected from the psych-leaning ArthurFest was a rave, but for 40-plus minutes the grassy Lawn melted into the ultrawold. From behind his shades MacLean turned "Crush the Liberation" even more sinister as pistons thwacked, theremins squiggled and loops layered and pixilated. The gelid "Shining Skinned Friend" and rubbery "Give Me Every Little Thing" made LCD Soundsytem look like a disco-dealing session band with a shouty, boorish frontman. This video shows the trio delivering "Tito's Way" with extreme prejudice. Awesome!

  • After seeing the synth Juan was usng up close, I think it's safe to say he was not using a Moog. He was using the Korg MicroKORG

  • Damn it, you are so right. I had no idea he'd gotten the microKorg. I presumed he was using a favored, older analog synth, but I guess it makes sense to use the microKorg, especially when on the road; lighter, smaller, easy to replace or inexpensive enough so he can buy two, and no more worries about banging up his vintage gear. Thanks for pointing that out.

  • This is what electronica is all about :D

  • Where did you find this footage? Arthur were supposed to make a documentary and never did as far as I know.

  • I like the way he stuffs his mouth onto the mic.

  • Awkward hipsters dancing = great.

  • i like this.

  • ah... it's ad2003 into tito's way. should have listened to the whole thing before commenting :/

  • are you sure this is tito's way? sounds like ad2003... maybe i'm wrong?

  • 3:17 yeehah!

  • @cliklab No problem. I own one myself and noticed that one of the sounds seem a lot like the beginning of "Give Me Every Little Thing". The patch he was using on Tito's Way was the unedited B54, known as the "70's Funk Lead".
