  • I just hope that as Americans we don't New Age it like we've done Tai-chi. Listen folks both are martial arts both are combat arts you mamby-pamby new agers stay far away from this.

  • Point well taken, jahhy, but perhaps you can see in this an internet-era an analog to the evolution of other arts; masses of people now stare blindly at master paintings in museums, and go to concerts to pretend to understand great works of music. It was not long ago in history that few had such opportunity. Among the many who now look yet cannot see, however, are usually a few who do gain much from these public displays.

  • who NEW Age taichi were both: Yang chen fu And Wu kan chuan when they Both opened their school in Shanghai in the twenties, after the 1911 revolution. They made it calistechnics for everybody. They needed money.

  • it isn't just good for your health, it teaches you how to utilize all your strength. yes learning MMA is the quickest way to become strong, bagua has the most potential strength. you can take any dumbass and make him a mma fighter, but it takes understanding to become an accomplished martial artist.

  • Amen to that. The thing about New Agers is not that they want to practice the art but the just want to go to some seminar or get a dvd and want to teach it ( and yes charge for it). They are typically a contradiction to their beliefs also I never have seen one that could do any of the IMA well and because of that reason it is so watered down that they can't help anyone .

  • funny! I thought I was the only one who had noticed this happening! New-agers have a right to enjoy the benefits of internal arts just like the rest of us, its just sad that they seldom develop any internal strength, mistaking softness for weakness. I take jansondaybreaks point entirely, but the problem is that as 'new age tai chi' proliferates, the art is not only misrepresented, but actually lost! When we meet them we should be diplomatic and try to get them excited by the real thing.

  • I second that.

  • Those New-Age people are important, with polar bears desiring human-flesh to snack on. There's a reason why Alaska is getting more tourist these days, feeding those polar-bears will help maintain their numbers. Would you be so kind as to send some New-Agers north, to pet our polar-bears?

  • With Tai Chi those movements are made correct by testing individual techniques with Push Hands, correct techniques with a martial art prevents self-inflicted injuries. Allow the New Age people to destroy their own bodies, do remember to send some to Alaska. Our polar bears in Alaska Zoos do need to chew on pieces of New-Agers, because they have feelings also.

  • Yes but dont discount the healing benefits of circle walking qigong. American "new agers" are not the only ones doing these arts primarily for health - in China thats what the majority do too. The parks are full of "namby pambys" everyday. I say, good for them!

  • What he is performing is called the "Eight Mother Palms" These are the preliminary form, before the longer "Rou Ju Chuan" form is learned. It comes from the Cheng style. Cheng Ting Hua taught his son Cheng Yu Long, who in turn passed it on to master Lu as demonstrated here. Most Pa Kua Chang you see today is more Wu Shu than traditional Pa Kua Chang. You can both his rootedness, and his agility if you have experience enough to see such things. I am honored to study within this lineage.
