A CSX local goes down the interchange track. The lead unit has a Canadian-style K5HR24 horn not too different from the ones used on BC Rail locomotives.

  • the K5H reminds me alot of a steam whistle. and this one is loud!

  • I've never heard of a K5H sounding like a steam whistle. :)

  • yeah, they say that of all train horns, the K5H is maybe the closest to sounding like "a whistle in the night" and i agree. when nathan and airchime invented the K series back in the 50s, the idea with the K5H was to get a horn that sounded as close to a steam whistle as possible, and while it may not exactly be what they had in mind, it's pretty close in my opinion.

  • Never thought of that. Thanks for the info! :)

  • youre welcome. and about 20 years later, they bored out the inside of the 3 and 4 bells to lower the pitch of the horn to create what became known as the K5LA for amtrak, but the first ones went to chessie system in addition to amtrak, then all the other roads caught on as well.
