In Culture and terms meaning,
Wu（武）Shu（術）= Kong（功）Fu（夫）= Martial Arts
"Wu" in Chinese can be used to mean "Martial",
and "Shu" means "Art" or "Technique".
How it be used by Mao is the history problem.
By the way, Kickboxing is from the West but not China, and can be one kind of Wu Shu in terms meaning.
Beside, this is San（散）da（打）,not Kickboxing, and I'm the Chinese, too.

wushu is NOT another name for Kung fu. Wushu was a propaganda tool used by Mao to promote China and the glory of communism. It emphasized athletics, precision and grace (which is what the competitors are marked on). Kung fu is a martial art, and is marked on how much damage one could cause.
Wushu is closer to ballet or gymnastics than it is to Kungfu.
Mind you, this is sanda not wushu.
