Im a big Ali fan but for the life of me cant understand why late in his career to use his ability to take punches as an asset. The rope a dope worked with Foreman but in other fights he just took needless punches, this fight he left it behind and actually trained properly. Being in the boxing game he must of met countless punch drunk old fighters, did he think he would be immune from this.

@bareavis Perhaps because Pacheco left Ali's corner after the Shavers fight. He no longer wanted Ali to take punishment in the ring especially after the Shavers fight in which Ali took some punishing shots. He noticed Ali was becoming ill, had no business in the ring anymore, Ali was aging and was no longer the Ali of old. Pacheco being the doctor he knew what was coming. So maybe Pacheco was saying that Ali shouldn't have been fighting at all even though this was a star performance.
