In Naval termonology, skylarking is best known as goofing off. Here is a short Super 8 video of some sailors goofing off. This video taken during the Spring of 1975 somewhere on the high seas of the Pacific.
the most fun we ever had was when we had a giant water fight...we were throwing buckets of water and I think using fire hoses...anyway the captain was cool about and let us have our fun until water started getting inside the ship and filling up the hallways. So the captain came out and put a stop to a play time..
@metalrod23 A Mig flew over and dropped a bomb on us, I remember being down below on watch and hearing a giant explosion. Lucky for us it barely missed us and I don't recall any damage. We were often under heavy fire too...I used to stand bridge watch and so got to see those incoming shells landing in the water around us.
my dad served on that ship from 77 to 80. he was the last sailor to ride this ship before it was decommissioned in 1980. they called it "the okie boat" if you were on this ship let me know. mabye you might know him.
My father was Commanding Officer '71-'73' it was a fine ship and alot of fine men served on board I was pissed they let a sub sink her for training purposes...thanks for the video
I was gone by 72, but I did hear she got into a fire fight up near North vietnam, and that she was hit by either gun fire from a Mig or Air to surface missle, not really sure.

Is it true that this ship was hit by a Mig in 72?
