Actually knew nothing about his popularity.
Some days ago his grand son came to see him and said,

Then only a couple of days ago a report came on the national TV.
He was my favourite singer when I was a child!
In the 90's during this as we call it "destroika", he turned absolutely broke and had no job or concerts at all. To feed his family, he went to Paris and sang their at the Rasputine cafe.
