Simple penetration and expansion test of the Federal HST 9mm 147 grain hollowpoint, using a diluted form of SIM-TEST Ballistic Testing Media. This format is comparable to ballistic gel, and includes four layers of denim. Video includes brief overview of the cartridge, recoil shots, and one shot test. Post-shot evaluation shows bullet path through the block, average diameter, and retained weight. Test gun was a Glock 19 with 4" barrel. My 5-shot average muzzle velocity was 1006 fps. Test shot is from 10 feet. BB calibration, approx. 600 fps, was 3.60", average of 5 shots.

VERY IMPORTANT INFO REGARDING AMMO TESTS ON THIS CHANNEL:

Early on, I used wetpack for ammo testing, with or without denim. Beginning in 2011 I use SIM-TEST calibrated to ballistic gel specs plus 4 layers of denim. The denim is an IWBA standard simulating the density of heavy clothing. Please understand that these techniques are merely representations to indicate possible ballistics; they are not intended to replicate real-world street results. Even by adding bone, additional clothing, etc., there are just too many factors involved in a self-defense scenario to offer a 100% degree of accuracy when compared to street results. It is essential to perform exhaustive research on your carry choice, which could yield actual use data. The law-abiding citizen bears ultimate responsibility for their ammunition choice and insuring reliability in their handgun.

  • Have a question about the difference between the 134 gr. and 147 gr.- which one has the least amount of recoil?

  • @adamador

The 147 has less recoil, or least a softer push. Recoil is also subjective to the individual shooter. Alot of people think the .45 ACP has alot of recoil, yet I find it very pleasant to shoot.

  • i know i asked before, but since you have some jell, id like to see extreme shock. Always good videos!

  • @arridedry

I have some of those in .40, testing soon!

  • friend works at Federal Ammo, that is a Minnesota based ammo company, Anoka, Minnesota, famous for the already popular and effective hydroshock, wich has been used by other ammo companies to make new patents similar to it. unfortunatly employees get no discounts, and discussion of ammo is kept low key, even though most know the ammo and how it works already.

  • @scienceinprogress Also, in terms of expansion, lighter bullets (such as 115gr.) tend to expand more, heavier bullets (such as 147gr.) tend to expand less, and bullest with medium weights (such as 124gr.) tend to be in between the 115 and the 147gr's in terms of expansion.

  • @scienceinprogress

Grains means bullet weight. 9mm has 3 common weights: the 115gr., the 124gr. and the 147gr., although there are other less common weights for 9mm such as 100gr., 105gr., 127gr., and 135gr.. Each weight has its own set of characteristics, for example: 100gr. is the lightest & flies faster but has less stopping power, 147gr. is the heaviest & flies slower but has greater stopping power, 124gr. lies directly in the middle in terms of both characteristics.

  • what does the grain mean when you're talking about bullets? please respond, it would make my day to know this.
