Kathleen Ferrier sing Gustav Mahler's Kindertotenlieder.

In diesem Wetter, in diesem Braus,
Nie hätt' ich gesendet die Kinder hinaus;
Man hat sie getragen hinaus,
Ich durfte nichts dazu sagen!

In diesem Wetter, in diesem Saus,
Nie hätt' ich gelassen die Kinder hinaus,
Ich fürchtete sie erkranken;
Das sind nun eitle Gedanken.

In diesem Wetter, in diesem Graus,
Nie hätt' ich gelassen die Kinder hinaus;
Ich sorgte, sie stürben morgen,
Das ist nun nicht zu besorgen.

In diesem Wetter, in diesem Graus!
Nie hätt' ich gesendet die Kinder hinaus!
Man hat sie hinaus getragen,
ich durfte nichts dazu sagen!

In diesem Wetter, in diesem Saus, in diesem Braus,
Sie ruh'n als wie in der Mutter Haus,
Von keinem Sturm erschrecket,
Von Gottes Hand bedecket.
___________________________________________

In this weather, in this windy storm,
I would never have sent the children out;
They were carried outside -
I could say nothing about it!

In this weather, in this roaring storm,
I would never have let the children out.
I was afraid they had falllen ill,
but these thoughts are now idle.

In this weather, in this cruel storm,
I would never have let the children out;
I was worried they would die the next day -
but this is now no concern.

In this weather, in this cruel storm,
I would never have sent the children out;
They were carried outside -
I could say nothing about it!

In this weather, in this roaring, cruel storm,
they rest as they did in their mother's house:
they are frightened by no storm,
and are covered by the hand of God.

  • I feel Kindertotenlieder is the finest song cycle since Schubert and Kathleen Ferrier is the ultimate singer for this cycle.

  • This wonderful recording demonstates Mahlers' understanding of the anger that goes with the grief of loss, before acceptance. This music demonstates this completely-before the psychologists!

  • I love Ferrier In this. The text is an interesting confrontation with the fate. The poet stands toe to toe with God, proclaiming, as we do in grief for those taken from us out of proper sequence, that he would never have. . . released the children to the storm, to the roaring. He knew that they would fall to its cruelty. At 3:03, the triangle strikes, calling the poet back to hope, a major chord, and faith that these for whom we grieve are covered by the hand that is better than a mother's.

  • A wonderful interpretation, IMHO.

  • Only knew Baker in these.Adored always.Wheni saw that there were posts allowing that Ferrier recorded this music I thougth it would be tooperfect. We should all thank our heavens she didn't shy away from the greatest music.HerIch barme issoul tearing. did she record the Four last songs ofStrauss .That would just be too much heaven !

    Police Dive Squad members are right now searching Huruhuru Creek looking for missing 2 year old Aisling Symes in Henderson, Auckland. She went missing from Longburn Rd in the Auckland suburb of Henderson around 5.15pm last night. Around 100 searchers have been looking for the little girl, including a large team of specialist rescue personnel....

    Mahler's lied expresses the grief...So poignant and timeless.

  • Its not over yet.....dont miss from 5:25 to the very end!!

  • She is really transmiting the desperation of a parent who lost their children in this lied...you know that feeling of your tensed neck and your body cold and this angst in your chest but at the same time your hooked to it,I think this probably the best version ever of this lied,and the orchestra is doing an amazing job as well with the violins you can picture wind these storm is almost like a painting!

  • No other singer I have ever heard could render the grief in these songs like Kathleen Ferrier!
