Petra - capital of Edomo or Idumeya, later capital of Nabat empires, main city of sons of Isavii.
City is arranged on territories of modern Jordan, on height of more 900 meters above sea level and 660 meters above local environment, valley of Arava, in narrow canyon Sik.
Pass in valley -- through gorges, arranged north-up and south, whereas from east and west rocks steeply break, forming natural walls to 60 meters in height.

Petra settled down on crossroad of two major trade routes: one connected red sea with Damascus, other - persian gulf with Gaza at coast of mediterranean sea.
Sent from persian gulf to caravans, loaded with precious spices, Arabian desert had occasion with weeks bravely to transfer severe conditions, yet they did not reach cool of narrow canyon Sik, leading in long-awaited Petra.
Travellers found food, shelter and cool vivifying water there.

More than 2-х thousand of years back Petra was only place of temporary shelter of nomadic arabs - nabat , natives from north of arabia.
Beginning from several easy defended caves in rocks of Petra was gradually transformed with nabat in impregnable city-fortress.
