A demonstration of the Razer Hydra Motion Controller in Team Fortress 2.

Both the game footage and the footage of myself playing were shot in full uncompressed 1080p high definition. Enjoy!

  • It looks like you can toggle ratcheting between 1:1 movement for aiming, and the "smooth" Hydra specific aiming style where the direction you are looking only moves as your reticule nears the edge of your viewing angle?

I dont see why this would be good.

it looks like a neat controller though.

Razer appears to have stopped supporting drivers for more recent games, so it looks like this is another Super Scope 6 / Novint Falcon.

  • @JoshReflek Quite a lot of misinformation here. There is *no* ratcheting when you're in the 1:1, direct integration "mode". If you really wanted to, you could force the driver to use ratcheting, but you can't switch on the fly while in the game.

Razer does NOT support the controller *at all*. Sixense is the company who creates / tests / updates the drivers, and they're very active with their community (search Google for their forums). Razer is just the company who distributes the hardware.

  • @starwarsvideos ah, ok, thanks for the clarification :)

What do you think of the Hydra? is it an improvement over a mouse for games like TF2? tell me what you think of it.

  • @JoshReflek Here's the down 'n' dirty; I love the Hydra...it can give you a really fun, unique experience on TONS of games. That being said, it is most definitely *not* an improvement over the mouse. If you're getting it with the intention of being better at games, *don't* purchase it! It is an extremely fun peripheral that allows for unique gameplay (particularly in direct integration games), but will NOT give you an edge, due to certain limitations that are present with any motion controller.

  • @JoshReflek I purchased it not as a replacement for my mouse, but to supplement it. When playing seriously, I stick with the mouse. When looking for a good time (right now I'm playing Hard Reset with it, which is a fantastic experience, by the way) however, I enjoy bringing out my Hydra.

  • Hey, I use that server!

  • @hex37 No Heroes is my absolute favorite set of TF2 servers. I'm a VIP member and don't regret it for one second. Their servers are always filled, almost always deliver an awesome game, and the performance is unsurpassed by any other server I've found.

So, yeah, stick to No Heroes and if you play often consider becoming a VIP. It's super cheat (like, $3 a month or something, haha) and totally worth it.

  • @starwarsvideos ahh...thanks...it sounds like its more of a fun controller for those custom portal 2 maps or some other single player game where its not competitive but more of a spectacle, like mass effect or something visual.

    i appreciate your explanations :)

  • @ElegyForTheMasses No problem. The Hydra has very little DI support in games, but the controller itself can work in hundreds (Indirect Integration) with 0 help from the developer -- meaning games, old and new, can be used with it, whether it recognizes it as 'The Hydra' or just some controller. I'm familiar with the Falcon, but unsure of how much support it has. I also don't know if it can be used for games which don't specifically support it; but that's doubtful.

  • @starwarsvideos Thanks for the replies. I'm trying to figure out a little about this so I can decide between the hydra and the novint falcon. The falcon seems cool because of the force feedback and tangible weight of object in-game, but seems limited to fps and racing games mainly, where as this unit seems more widely tailored for various game genres.
