I wonder how much the plotline for the video was influenced by Todd Brownings "Freaks" in which a midget (Kurt Schneider) fell in love with the trapese artist (Olga Baclanova), although the latter was portrayed as unsympathetic.

it's a gypsy thing and it was pretty popular in the late 80's early 90's in arty/music circles. hats, ponytails and waistcoats etc.
