Hampshire College Dean Confronts Anti-Israel Hecklers, Urges Civility (short version)

On the evening of February 3, 2011, reserve Sgt. Benjamin Anthony of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), gave a talk in the Main Lecture Hall at Hampshire College, in Amherst, MA. He founded the organization, "Our Soldiers Speak" [http://www.oursoldiersspeak.org/], in order to share with the general public the experience of military service in one of the world's most controversial conflict zones. He spoke as an individual, and not as a representative of the military or government, which do not sponsor or fund him. Although Hampshire College staff introduced the talk by explaining the rules of civil discourse, a student group organized the event and the College, as such, was not the sponsor. Well-organized pro-Palestinian demonstrations took place before, during, and after the talk.

The introduction by College staff notwithstanding, disruptions occurred and grew more frequent and vocal. Here, Assistant Dean of Students for Community Advocacy Amnat Chittaphong insist on the need for respect and order. He also alludes to the fact that a student who expressed pro-Israel sentiments last semester was harassed and threatened.

There should be zero compromise between the soldiers who are perpetuating ethnic cleansing, land theft, house demolitions and those of us who stand up for universal human rights. Why should we understand the position of those who occupy and slaughter people in the service of a racist and ideologically insane state?
