Furthur is a rock band founded in 2009 by former Grateful Dead members Bob Weir and Phil Lesh. The band's lineup also includes John Kadlecik of the Dark Star Orchestra on guitar, Jeff Chimenti of RatDog on keyboards, Jay Lane of RatDog on drums, and Joe Russo of the Benevento/Russo Duo on drums.[1]
[edit]History

In 2008, for the first time in four years, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh began performing together, with a reunion of The Dead. A few months after The Dead's 2009 tour the musicians announced that they had formed a new band with Kadlecik, Chimenti, Lane, and Russo.
The band debuted with performances on September 2009, at the Fox Theatre in Oakland, California. They followed those shows up with a handful of more dates during 2009 including 5 shows in the northeast,[2] as well as live rehearsal sessions[3] and two New Years shows in California. During the New Years eve performances the band was joined by backing vocalists Zoe Ellis and Sunshine Garcia (no relation to Jerry Garcia). The band is also touring the U.S. from the 2nd of February through the 8th of March 2010, and will perform in San Francisco to celebrate Phil Lesh's 70th birthday.[4]

  • @coyote023 i too am thankful for the 700 shows i got to see with Jerry, but i think that you are missing the point of Furthur and their objective to "keep the vibe alive".we ALL had "a moment", be it 20, 30 or 40 years ago when we saw the Grateful Dead and a new world opened into our hearts, minds, souls and spirits.it happened, that moment where time stood still and we understood the world, life, the meaning of our lives and what it meant to be a part of this special thing

  • I am just glad that Furthur is carrying the torch. Is this the Grateful Dead? Pretty sure it is not. But I still like it, and of course all the old heads are saying "I am glad I got to see like 2,000 shows before blah, blah, blah". We are all very happy for you. Now please move along to whatever it is that OLD people like. ;-)

  • We're all mortal beings here and there's no telling when that coil will unwind into dust. Bless Jerry and crew for all their efforts. It's good to see Phil and Bob still carrying on, and, who knows, maybe on Jerry's 500th birthday the Dead repertoire will still be alive. That's not too far out, huh?

  • Sittin' here reading these comments and i just gotta laugh (hard). I would imagine the people that are sharing their experience with this plastic grateful dead never saw the real GD. And what kind of pants is ace wearing,i think his wife is probably looking for them back at their hotel. This dude that is trying to play garcia's parts is more than annoying why is it he tries to get garcias sound instead of finding his own? I am just thankful for the 350 shows i saw before vince welnik came around

  • I recall your darkness, when it crackled like a thunder cloud. Don't tell me this town aint got no heart, you just gotta poke around.

  • saw them in NYC last summer, God what an experience!! shakedown street is my favorite dead song for sure!!

  • Just saw the show in Lowell on the 30th of June. F*ckin awesome! What a great time!

  • fuck work is all i gotta say made me miss the first set i got there and they where just finishing the first set but all in all it was a amazing show

  • @Toppersbazaar I believe that may be what they have in mind.

  • Garcia must be dancin in his grave....if this thing works right we'll see each member replaced slowly over time....in 2030 the Dead will sell out 20K ...on an insane bunch of songs ....an incredible form of music conceived by and for the usage of psychedelics...opening minds
