The three movements of Big Tooth Aspen represent life, death and resurrection. The first movement, Twigs, depicts the energy of life. The second movement, Drooping Flowers is a mournful meditation. The third movement, Hairy Seeds in the Wind, is a celebration of rebirth and the promise and excitement of new life.
The flute uses many extended techniques throughout the piece, including pitch bending, multiphonics, and singing while playing.
Big Tooth Aspen was composed for this duo in the spring of 1995 and premiered at Kent State University just after its completion.
This recording was made live in Beijing at the Central Conservatory.
