Charles Mintz was the distributor of the "Oswald" series in 1927-'28; he went behind Walt and Roy Disney's back in late '27, and hired most of their staff (including Hugh Harman & Rudolf Ising and Friz Freleng) to make sure those cartoons were produced if Walt asked for an increase in his distribution fee. He did, and Walt was no suddenly longer involved with "his" animation unit. Ub Iwerks stayed with him to create Mickey Mouse a short time later...
My father owned a few trerrytoons profector silent films. Ahhh.. smell the nostalgia!!! We used to have Oswald the Rabbit!!! Disney was bought out by who on Oswald???
My mistake- this is indeed "Hot Sands", originally released in November 1934, co-directed by Paul Terry and Frank Moser {"Hot Turkey" was an embryonic version of this story}.
Castle Films had the rights to release Paul Terry's theatrical cartoons from the '30s for "home movie use" [16mm sound and 8mm silent, with intertitles] during the '40s and '50s. This was one of them (from 1945)- it was originally released as "Hot Turkey" in May 1930.
This is really cool! I love the old terrytoons, shame they're so hard to find..

...however, in 1929, Universal "eased" Mintz and his animators out of producing (and owning) Oswald, bringing in Walter Lantz to succeed them.
