Plans to build a controversial high speed rail link between London and Birmingham look set to get the go-ahead.
A new report prepared for ministers by Network Rail - which is in favour of the new link -- says alternatives will fail to deal with long-term overcrowding on trains.
The 100-mile rail link, due to be completed between 2016 and 2026, aims to cut the journey time between the two cities to 49 minutes.
