You need to show the head with the corroded and burnt valves. Gasoline engines are designed to use gasoline. Running the gas engine lean on petroleum fuel has severe implications.Using fuels other than petro also has severe implications.

perhaps its from water condensating after being turned off-maybe running without water for a predetermined time before shutting the engine off would stop water collecting in the cylinder...

Can't imagine this happening if the water particles were put into the engine, preheated and possibly at a smaller size (vapor) not being sprayed by the carb.
This could be just an issue of properly regulating the flow of water with fuel. That and engine heat issues. Needs to be a certain temperature to evaporate the water after combustion.
bummer... did it run at least or you just love to kick start?
